San Diego Section Soccer : Granite Hills Remains Perfect

The Granite Hills High School boys soccer team was undefeated and untied during 21 regular-season games. And the Eagles got off to an impressive start in the CIF 3-A playoffs on their home field against Mar Vista on Wednesday afternoon.

The Eagles (22-0) overwhelmed the Mariners (8-7-3), 6-0, to advance to the semifinals. Wally Polcyn scored two goals for Granite Hills, and goalkeeper Scott Emery recorded the shutout. It was Emery’s 14th shutout this season.

In other 3-A playoff games:

Torrey Pines 3, Bonita Vista 1--The Falcons beat the Barons at Bonita Vista to advance to the semifinals. They will face Granite Hills either next Tuesday or Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Helix 2, Mira Mesa 1--Dave Pedula scored both Highlander goals, including the game-winner eight minutes into the second half, to send Helix into the semifinals. The Highlanders will face Poway in the next round.

Poway 5, Point Loma 1--Scott Anderson had two goals and Steve Black added a goal and three assists for the Titans (21-1-1). Poway will play Helix either next Tuesday or Wednesday night.

In 2-A playoffs:

Bishop’s 4, San Pasqual 2--The Eagles were ahead, 2-0, but Bishop’s came back to score four straight goals. Bishop’s (16-4-2) will play at University City (16-2-1) at 3:30 Friday. The Centurions had an opening-round bye.

Hilltop 6, Francis Parker 2--Victor Alfaro had four goals to lead the Lancers (10-3-2). Hilltop moves on to face St. Augustine at 3:30 Friday on the Saints’ field.

Kearny 4, Mission Bay 2--After a scoreless first half, the Komets (9-8-5) broke loose to score four times against the Buccaneers (9-7-5). Kearny will play Ramona (15-4-2) in the quarterfinals.

San Diego 1, La Jolla 0--George Gordines’ goal in the 15th minute of the first half stood up at San Diego High. The Cavers (14-3-4) will meet Chula Vista (14-2-1) in the quarterfinals Wednesday afternoon at Chula Vista.
