San Diego Section Soccer Playoffs : Unseeded Bishop’s Eliminates Top-Seeded University City, 2-1

Bishop’s High School upset top-seeded University City, 2-1, in a San Diego Section 2-A soccer quarterfinal Friday afternoon at University City.

Peter Koopman had the winning goal for unseeded Bishop’s (17-3-1) with 20 minutes to play. Chris Jones had given Bishop’s the lead by scoring five minutes into the game, then Mark Miller scored for University City (16-3-1) with two minutes left in the half.

Goalie Bruce Neal made 11 saves for Bishop’s, which plays Hilltop in the semifinals.

Hilltop 1, St. Augustine 0--Victor Alfaro, with an assist from Carlos Leos, had the only goal five minutes into the game at St. Augustine. Alfaro has five goals in two playoff games for Hilltop (11-3-2) and Leos has four assists. Fourth-seeded St. Augustine finished at 16-3-4.

Ramona 7, Kearny 0--Pablo Carmona had four goals in the victory at third-seeded Ramona (16-4-2). Carmona scored the game’s first goal and Steve Baker had a goal on a direct kick to give Ramona a 2-0 lead at halftime. Baker and Lance Brown added goals in the second half. Kearny finished at 9-8-5.

Chula Vista 4, San Diego 0--The No. 2-seeded Spartans (15-2-1) won the game at Chula Vista to earn a place in the semifinals against Ramona. San Diego, which beat La Jolla on Wednesday, finished the season 14-4-4.
