Southern Section Soccer : Laguna Hills Wins With Goal in 2nd Overtime

Sophomore right wing Erin McGinnis’ goal at 3:57 of the second-overtime period gave Laguna Hills High School girls soccer team a 3-2 victory over Palos Verdes in the first round of the Southern Section 4-A playoffs.

Heather McIntyre and Joanna Noble had scored earlier goals and goalie Treann Clinton had 14 saves to lead the Hawks (16-5-2).

Laguna Hills advances to the second round on Wednesday.

In other 4-A action:

Edison 4, Newport Harbor 0--Joy Beifield scored two goals to lead the host Chargers to a first-round victory. Lana Niccole and Kelli Winkler added scores for the Chargers (19-3-3). Goalie Jill Worden (five saves) and halfback Jannel Rodgers helped Edison record the shutout.

Mission Viejo 4, Huntington Beach 1--Natalie Ricca, Kim Dutton, Kerri Kennedy and Stacey Hopper all scored for the Diablos. Mission Viejo faces top-seeded Torrance in the second round on Wednesday.

Bishop Montgomery 2, Corona del Mar 0--Goalie Stephanie Noonan had 24 saves for the Sea Kings, but it wasn’t enough. Renee Esquivil and Molly Meehan scored goals for the Knights (16-6-1).
