The Cal State Northridge men’s basketball team will try to sew up the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. title tonight at 8:05 in its regular-season finale at Cal State Los Angeles.

The Matadors, who are 10-3 in the CCAA and 18-9 overall, hold a one-game lead over Cal State Los Angeles and need to win to prevent a post-season playoff.

Cal State Northridge, a winner in 13 of its last 16 games, fell to the Eagles, 62-59, in the teams’ last meeting at CSUN on Feb. 1.

The Eagles earned their chance to play for a first-place tie with recent wins over Cal State Dominguez Hills and Chapman College.

Cal State Los Angeles, which is 9-4 in the league and 18-9 overall, is led by Sam Veal, who leads the CCAA in scoring with a 22 points per game. Veal scored eight points in Friday’s win over Dominguez Hills, but sat out the Chapman College game for disciplinary reasons.

Other scoring leaders for Cal State Los Angeles include guards Michael Cooper and Shawn Holliday and center Tony Brown. They both average nine points per game.

Cal State Northridge earned a share of the CCAA title, its fourth in head coach Pete Cassidy’s 14 seasons at the school, with weekend victories over Chapman College and Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Guard Mike Almeido led the team in scoring in both wins with 18 and 20 points, respectively.

Center Tom Ruetten added a career-high 16 points in Saturday’s 76-61 win over Dominguez Hills, while guard Rafael Meza came off the bench both nights to add 13 and 10 points, respectively, while hitting 13 of 16 free throws.

Harvard Spikes Chatsworth

Harvard High’s boys volleyball team took defending city champions Chatsworth to the limit Wednesday in a non-league match, beating the Chancellors in three of five sets.

The Saracens won the first two matches without much difficulty, 15-12 and 15-5.

Chatsworth came back in the third set, however, 15-5, and came from behind again in the fourth set to squeak by Harvard, 17-15.

But Harvard, led by 5-9 senior Brad Douglas and 5-5 sophomore Baird Conners, staged a rally of its own to beat the Chancellors in the fifth set, 15-10, and take the match.

It was the first game for both teams this season.

Also in the ceremony, the entire USC women’s basketball team will be made honorary Girl Scouts.

Michele Hampton made the strongest showing for the Lady Matadors, setting a school record in the 400 intermediate medley with a time of 4:35.6. Hampton placed first in four events and took second in another.

The men’s team trained during the meet, which was partly responsible for their second place showing. Despite that, first place Cal State Bakersfield beat the Matadors by only 56 points, 851-795.

The men were led by diver Roland King, who won both of his events, and Jeff Kubiak, who took first in the 200-meter breast stroke.
