College Baseball : SDSU Suffers Third Straight Loss

San Diego State suffered its third consecutive baseball loss--a 6-5 decision to Loyola Marymount Saturday afternoon, in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader at Smith Field. The second game was called in the second inning because of rain. The Lions were leading, 3-0.

Loyola scored the eventual winning run in the sixth. With two outs, Billy Beans walked and stole second. Jim Donnells followed with a single to right, which scored Beans to make it 6-2.

The Aztecs (10-6) came back with three runs in their half of the inning, two on RBI singles by Steve Hokama and Steve Hill. Hokama scored the third run on a wild pitch.

In other action:

University of San Diego 14-5, CS Los Angeles 1-16--In the first of the doubleheader at USD, Steve Bogard had two hits and three RBIs and Jeff Grotewald drove in two runs for USD. Greg Bertrand (2-4) pitched a complete-game win. In the second game, Grotewald hit a solo home run for USD (5-11-1).

UC Riverside 10-8, UC San Diego 2-3--Mike Williams was 6 for 7 and drove in 5 runs to lead Riverside’s sweep at Olsen Field in La Jolla. David Mendoza had two hits in each game, including a solo home run for UCSD (9-6-1). UCSD’s John Rosness added a home run in the opening game. UCR is 12-2.
