Preps SPRING SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Poly Wins Home Run Match in Wind, 17-14

The wind was blowing out Thursday at Polytechnic High, and sluggers made the best of it.

Seven home runs were hit as Poly registered a 17-14 win over Verdugo Hills.

Poly built up a 17-6 lead going into the final inning, then had to sweat it out as Verdugo Hills belted three homers to come close. Bill Yerby had a three-run blast, while Louis Enriquez and Dennis Ortiz had solo shots.

Poly was led by Tim Palafox, who went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs and a home run. Tim Hunt had a three-run homer in the second and opened the sixth with a triple.

Both teams are now 2-3 in league.

Kennedy 5, Van Nuys 2

Sophomore Kevin Farlow went 2 for 3 and scored three runs as Kennedy High improved its record to 2-0 in the Mid-Valley League. Van Nuys is now 1-1.

Birmingham 6, San Fernando 5

Birmingham High scored six runs in the first inning and managed to hold on behind the strong relief pitching of Jordan Cook to defeat San Fernando at home.

John Glantz, Kevin Zeitz, Tim Pico and Mike Maron all hit safely during the Braves’ first-inning explosion.

Cook replaced starting pitcher Mike Maron in the fifth inning and struck out five in three innings.

Birmingham is 1-1 in the Mid-Valley League.

TRACK Saugus 71, Antelope Valley 64

Roy Bradshaw had a double win, including a wind-aided 14.4 in the high hurdles, as Saugus won its sixth of seven meets of the season. Bradshaw also had a 41.6 win in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles.

Junior Darin Stonerock had a 4:32 victory in the 1,600 meters and was second in the 800. His twin brother, Kirk, won the 3,200 in 9:56 and was second in the 1,600.

St. Bonaventure 105, Oak Park 28

John Knight of Oak Park set a school record in the shot put with an effort of 57-5. He broke his old record of 56-11 1/2, set two weeks ago.

GYMNASTICS

Monroe 103, South Gate 94.4

Brian Herring won four individual events and took the all-around to pace the defending City champions to their second win of the season.

Herring, second in the city last year, won the floor exercise, vault, parallel bars and high bar en route to a 44.1 score in the all-around. His best individual mark was an 8.8 score in the vault. He earned an 8.1 in the floor exercise.

SOFTBALL

Village Christian 11, Webb 0

Michelle Vail of Village Christian High pitched a no-hitter to defeat visiting Webb in an Alpha League game.

Vail, a sophomore, struck out 14 and walked 2 to improve the Crusaders record to 2-0 in league and 3-1 overall.

Third baseman Mary Thomas collected four hits for Village Christian, while Shannon Edwards and Pam Hale each had two hits.
