College Baseball : Irvine Splits With Oral Roberts

The UC Irvine baseball team split a doubleheader Saturday with No. 16-ranked Oral Roberts, losing the first game, 18-15, and winning the second, 12-8, at Irvine.

In the first game, most of the Oral Roberts attack could be summed up in two words: Mike Shambaugh. The sophomore first baseman had three home runs, including a grand slam in the sixth inning. Shambaugh had eight RBIs in the game and has hit seven home runs this season.

In the second game, the Anteaters (14-11-1) broke out to a 6-1 lead. However, by the fourth inning, UCI trailed, 7-6. The Anteaters had two runs in the fourth to take the lead for good at 8-7. Mike Fay got the game-winning hit when he tripled home shortstop Adam Ging, who had singled earlier. The Anteaters added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to assure the win. Oral Roberts is 20-7.

Pitcher Bo Kent (1-3) earned his first win of the season by pitching the last six innings.

In other college baseball:

Southern California College 7-15, Cal Lutheran 1-3--With the two wins, the Vanguards moved two games ahead of the Kingsmen in NAIA Division 3. Cal Lutheran (3-3) entered the doubleheader tied with SCC (5-1, 19-10-2), but strong performances by Tom Link and Brian Otten in the first game and by Dave Turney in the second led the Vanguards to the sweep.

Left fielder Link hit a two-run home run in the third inning to lead SCC to the win in the first game. Link went 2 for 3. Junior pitcher Otten (5-3) earned the win. He struck out nine Kingsmen and allowed five hits.

In the second game, Turney went 2 for 4 with a double and four RBIs. The Vanguards had 11 hits in the game. Andy Andreas (5-2) earned the win for SCC.
