Young Will Likely Miss Oakland Game

Quarterback Steve Young, who injured his left knee in Saturday’s loss to the Arizona Outlaws, probably will miss this Sunday’s Los Angeles Express game against the Oakland Invaders at the Coliseum.

The Express lists Young’s status as questionable, but he was still on crutches Tuesday. Young suffered a hyper-extension of the knee when hit by Arizona defensive back Carl Allen in the third quarter of the Express’ 27-13 loss to the Outlaws.

“I’m trying to put weight on it,” Young said Tuesday. “I screwed up a little yesterday (Monday). I tried to take some stairs, which was a major mistake.”

Express Coach John Hadl said he hoped Young would be well enough by game time to serve as a backup to Frank Seurer, who will start against Oakland.

Hadl also said that the Express would try to sign a reserve quarterback this week.

Express Notes Steve Young is having a difficult time dealing with his injury. “I’ve never been out a play in my life,” he said after Saturday’s game. He drives a four-wheel drive vehicle with a clutch but refused assistance and somehow drove himself home after the team had arrived back in Los Angeles Saturday night. . . . The Express carries only two quarterbacks on its roster Saturday night, Young and Frank Seurer. So who would have played had Seurer been injured? “I had my shoes on, I was ready,” said the 44-year-old Hadl. “They had the contract and a signing bonus right there on the sideline.” Actually, reserve wide receiver Kris Haines would have taken over.
