A sailor was killed and another injured Wednesday when their car collided with a tanker truck that was parked on the shoulder of southbound Interstate 5 near E Street, the California Highway Patrol reported. Petty Officer 3rd Class Brian Hackett, 21, was pronounced dead at the scene about 2:03 a.m. The driver of the car, Petty Officer 2nd Class Richard Volk, was cut free of the car by firefighters and taken by Life Flight helicopter to the UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was listed in fair condition, authorities said. Both sailors were crewmen on the guided missile destroyer Berkeley. The 22-year-old Volk was arrested on suspicion of felony drunken driving and manslaughter, said Highway Patrol spokesman Mike Henry. The driver of the truck was not injured.
