College Softball : Fullerton Takes Hawaii Title

Cal State Fullerton won the Hawaii Invitational softball title in Honolulu when the Fresno State-UCLA game was rained out. The Bruins were leading that game in the fourth inning, 2-0, and the winner was slated to play Fullerton for the title, but the game was called because of rain and Fullerton declared the tournament champion.

Fullerton was 3-0 in the tournament while every other team had at least one loss.

Fullerton’s overall record is now 29-4 and the Titans are ranked first in the country.

In other college softball action:

The Santa Ana College softball team improved its record to 22-1 with two victories in the College of Sequoias Invitational Easter Tournament in Visalia.

In a second-round game, Santa Ana defeated Taft, 2-0, behind Lani Silva’s one-hitter. Melinda Barrera was 3 for 3 and drove in both Santa Ana runs with a first-inning double.

In a quarterfinal game, Santa Ana routed Kings River, 9-0, on the strength of Chris Makimoto’s one-hitter.

Makimoto (11-0) gave up a single to the first Kings River batter and then retired 21 batters in a row. Sam Arledge went 4 for 4 with three doubles to lead the Santa Ana offense.

In other Sequoia Tournament action, Kings River beat Cypress, 4-3, and then Cypress beat Long Beach City College, 1-0, in eight innings.
