Patient Krickstein Beats Teltscher

Aaron Krickstein played a patient baseline game to beat Eliot Teltscher, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, Wednesday in the first round of the $500,000 World Championship of Tennis finals at Dallas.

In the night’s other match, Joakim Nystrom upset his Swedish Davis Cup teammate Henrik Sundstrom, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4, and will play top-seeded John McEnroe in tonight’s quarterfinals.

Krickstein won the 11th game of the final set with a series of baseline shots, changing speeds and direction into both corners. Teltscher hit a return wide, giving Krickstein a service break and a 6-5 lead. The latter held service to close out the three-hour match.

Krickstein, 17, will meet Jimmy Connors Friday night.

Krickstein, making his first appearance in the WCT finals, broke Teltscher’s service with a passing shot in the 12th game to win the first set. Teltscher came back to win the second set, but the teenager took the third set with a series of passing shots. Teltscher’s serve-and-volley game gave him the fourth set to even the match.

Chris Evert Lloyd routed Elise Burgin, 6-1, 6-0, in the second round of the $200,000 Family Circle Cup at Hilton Head, S.C.

Lloyd returns to action today against Pam Casale, who advanced by beating Ginny Purdy, 6-1, 6-3.

In other matches, second-seeded Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria had to come from behind to beat Iva Budarova of Czechoslavakia, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0; Carrina Carlsson of Sweden beat Anne Minter of Australia, 6-4, 6-2; third-seeded Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germeny defeated Rosalyn Fairbank of South Africa, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, and fourth-seeded Pam Shriver trounced Kerry Reid of Australia, 6-1, 6-1.

In the day’s only upset, unseeded Virginia Ruzici surprised No. 13 Michele Torres, 6-1, 6-3.
