Three Cal State Fullerton gymnasts picked up five All-American honors at Saturday’s NCAA National women’s gymnastics championships in Salt Lake City, giving the school a career total of 58 such awards.

Utah’s Elaine Alfano claimed her second national championship on the vault Saturday, scoring a 9.625, while Fullerton’s Callie Glanton finished sixth at 9.30 and teammate Tami Elliott finished eighth at 9.175.

Lisa Mitzel of Utah tallied a 9.60 in the floor exercise for first place. She was followed by Mary Kay Brown of Arizona and Becky Rashoff, who claimed second place with 9.55 scores. Elliott finished fourth at 9.45.

On the uneven bars, Penney Hauschild of Alabama won at 9.70. Fullerton’s Roni Barrios was seventh at 9.10.

No Titans competed in the balance beam event, which was won by Lisa Zeis of Arizona State with a score of 9.55.

The NCAA individual events championship format names All-Americans those who finish in the top eight of the individual events or the all-around.

On Friday night, Elliott tied for third in the all-around with a score of 37.65. The University of Utah claimed its fifth consecutive national championship, while Cal State Fullerton finished fifth. That fifth place finish ended the Titans’ nine-year streak of finishing in the top three in the nation.

“This team faced a lot of adversity this week,” Cal State Fullerton Coach Lynn Rogers said. “Despite the fact we did not finish in the top three, I was still proud of the way this team hung together. Tami Elliott had a super week for us and proved why she is one of the nation’s top performers.”

Elliott is a sophomore at Fullerton and is the only collegian on the U.S. national team.
