USFL Roundup : Walker, Flutie Pave the Way for Generals, 34-7

Herschel Walker ran for two touchdowns and the New Jersey Generals scored on every possession through three quarters Sunday while routing the Portland Breakers, 34-7, in front of 38,245 at East Rutherford, N.J.

Walker rushed for 109 yards on 25 carries, his fifth 100 yard-plus game this season. Last week, he rushed for a USFL-record 233 yards. Doug Flutie completed 13 of 18 passes for 191 yards and one touchdown.

Portland (3-5) averted a shutout on Matt Robinson’s 24-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Allen in the fourth quarter, making the score 27-7.

The Generals (5-3) pushed their lead to 34-7 when Rod Pegues ran 35 yards for a touchdown.

New Jersey built a 21-0 lead on Walker’s two one-yard runs and Flutie’s 24-yard pass to tight end Jeff Spek.

Roger Ruzek kicked field goals of 44 and 27 yards as the Generals made it 27-0 at halftime.

Memphis 13, Baltimore 10--Alan Duncan kicked a 35-yard field goal at 6:20 of sudden-death overtime, and the Showboats ended a four-game losing streak by edging the Stars in front of 15,728 at College Park, Md.

Duncan was released by the Showboats (4-4) two weeks ago after missing two extra points but was re-signed Friday.

The Stars (3-4-1), defending USFL champions, sent the game into overtime on Chuck Fusina’s 11-yard touchdown pass to Willie Collier with 4:18 left.

Orlando 24, Arizona 19--Rickey Claitt scored on a three-yard run late in the third quarter, and the Renegades held on to upset the Outlaws at Tempe, Ariz.

Arizona (4-4) made it 21-19 on Doug Williams’ 54-yard pass play to wide receiver Al Williams with 46 seconds left, but a two-point conversion pass fell incomplete.
