Outfielder Steve Kemp, on the disabled list since late in spring training, will work out with the Pittsburgh Pirates this weekend and may be reactivated, according to Pirate Manager Chuck Tanner.

Kemp, obtained in an off-season deal that sent shortstop Dale Berra to the New York Yankees, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in January to repair damage to the rotator cuff.

Kemp played in several exhibition games but had problems with long throws to the infield from left field and returned to his California home on April 7 to continue rehabilitating the shoulder. Kemp has been working daily with a physical therapist.

Kemp will rejoin the Pirates on Friday in St. Louis. If the shoulder has strengthened sufficiently to allow him to play the outfield, he will be reactivated, Tanner said.

Kemp is eligible to come off the disabled list Sunday.
