Danzadar, Apprentice Lozoya Win
Danzadar drew off through the stretch to win the $64,250 Las Cienegas Handicap at Santa Anita Friday, giving apprentice jockey Dario Lozoya his first stakes victory at the Arcadia track.
Pampas, the even-money favorite ridden by Fernando Toro, finished second in the race for older fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up. Natural Summit, ridden by Jorge Estrada, was third, a neck behind Pampas.
The 13-10 second choice, Irish O’Brien, suffered multiple breaks to her right front sesamoids when she fell near the eighth pole. Jockey Joe Steiner was unhurt in the spill. Irish O’Brien was reported to have only an outside chance of surviving her injuries.
Covering about 6 1/2 furlongs down the hillside turf course in 1:14, Danzadar earned $37,250 while winning for the third time in seven starts in 1985.
Danzadar paid $16.40, $4.80 and $3.
