College Baseball : Ging Hits Two Home Runs in UCI’s 9-4 Win

Adam Ging hit his first two home runs of the season and drove in five runs Friday to lead UC Irvine to a 9-4 Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. victory at Long Beach.

The Southern Division win improved the Anteaters’ conference record to 7-8 and overall record to 20-20-1. The 49ers are 5-13 and 19-31.

Ging hit a two-run home run off losing pitcher Steve Lankard in the first and then hit another home run with two on in the fifth.

Doug Linton went seven innings to get the win for Irvine and improved his record to 5-5. Brett Martin pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Linton.

Don Davis had two hits, including a double and a home run, and two RBIs for Irvine and Tom Baine was 2 for 4 with a double. Paul Thibert was 3 for 5 with a triple and two RBIs for Long Beach.

The teams play a doubleheader at noon today.

Cal Poly Pomona 5, Chapman 4--Pomona broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the top of the ninth inning then held on to beat Chapman in Hart Park at Orange.

First-place Pomona (9-3, 19-21-1) got its first run in the ninth when Chapman reliever Mike Lomeli threw a wild pitch with the bases loaded. The second Pomona run scored on Tom Weeks’ sacrifice fly.

Chapman (6-14, 16-22) rallied for one run in the bottom of the inning to cut the Broncos’ lead to 5-4 but could get no closer.

Michael Munoz (9-6) went 8 to get the win for Pomona and Darren Gonzales retired the final two Panther batters to get the save. Chip Peterson (2-2) was the losing pitcher.

Weeks led the Pomona offense with a home run and two RBIs and teammate Mike Patterson had two hits and an RBI. Craig Kuhsey hit two home runs and drove in three runs for Chapman.

The teams play a doubleheader at noon today.
