Cousins Die in Early-Morning Auto Crash

Two cousins were killed early Sunday when their car skidded out of control, jumped a curb and crashed into a tree in Huntington Beach, authorities said.

Heavy rescue equipment was used to pull the bodies of the driver, David Lee Bush Jr., 19, and passenger, Douglas Lynn Bush Jr., 16, both of Huntington Beach, from the car, which was wrapped around the tree, authorities said.

Huntington Beach Sgt. Darrell Klopp said the accident occurred about 1:15 a.m. as David Bush was driving a 1981 Chevrolet Corvette north on Brookhurst Street, north of Atlanta Avenue, at high speed.

As he approached Cliff Drive, the car skidded out of control, jumped a curb and continued skidding until it struck a tree, Klopp said. The force of the impact, which was on the passenger’s side, was such that it “wrapped the vehicle completely around the tree,” he said. The car was on fire when police arrived.

Neither victim was wearing a seat belt, Klopp said. They appeared to have been killed by the impact, not the fire, he said.
