The pilot who was killed in a fiery crash along the coast Saturday had left El Monte Airport about an hour before. He disappeared from an air traffic controller’s radar screen and slammed into rugged brush near El Capitan State Beach northwest of Santa Barbara, authorities said. The pilot has been tentatively identified as a 32-year-old Sierra Madre man but investigators were waiting to confirm the identity with dental records before releasing the man’s name, Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Deputy Don Glasgow said. National Transportation and Safety Board investigators were sifting through the charred wreckage of the single-engine Beechcraft F-33 to determine the cause of the crash.
