Prep HIGHLIGHTS : Davis Powers Simi by Thousand Oaks

Glen Davis and Shaun Murphy hit home runs in support of pitcher Sean Harrigan as Simi Valley maintained its hold on first place in the Marmonte League with a 5-2 victory at Thousand Oaks Wednesday.

Davis hit a game-winning three-run homer in the sixth inning to provide to break a 2-2 tie, while Murphy opened the scoring with a solo shot in the first inning. Harrigan, who had nine strikeouts while allowing five hits, improved his record to 10-2 overall (6-1 in league).

Simi Valley is 7-2 in league and 21-3 overall. Thousand Oaks dropped to 4-4 in the league standings.

SOFTBALL

Chaminade 9, Bell-Jeff 1

Melissa Ingalls had three hits and three runs batted in to lead Chaminade past Bell-Jeff.

Jenny Brown allowed only three hits in improving her record to 5-2 and had a shutout into the fifth inning, when Bell-Jeff scored its lone run after one of six Chaminade errors.

Chaminade, which raised its record to 7-2 in league play and 11-4 overall with the victory, scored all the runs its needed in the first inning on a two-run double by Ingalls and another run-scoring double from Erin Halvert.

Viewpoint 9, Westlake 2

Chrysta Leadbetter and Jamie Berkman went three for five at bat to lead Viewpoint to a 9-2 victory over Westlake in a non-conference game.

While Leadbetter and Berkman were leading the Patriots’ offense, winning pitcher Roxana Rafik struck out 11 batters to raise her record to 8-1. Rafik has struck out 109 batters in her last 61 innings.

The win put Viewpoint’s record at 10-1 overall, while Westlake dropped to 5-13.

Notre Dame 11, Corvallis 1

The Scotties managed only six hits--all singles--as Notre Dame defeated Corvallis in a five-inning game at Notre Dame.

The game was called at five innings because of the 10-run rule. Sophomore right fielder Gigi Vargas had a triple. Knight catcher Karen Kuykendall hit a home run in the fourth inning.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Kennedy def. Taft, 3-1

Kennedy defeated Taft, 15-8, 13-15, 16-14, 15-13 in a match decided by defense.

The victory secures second place for the Golden Cougars with a 7-1 league record. Taft, which is in third place in league with a 4-4 record, was led by seniors Bob Green and Erik Peters had 15 and 13 kills respectively.

El Camino Real def. Canoga Park, 3-1

Both the El Camino Real varsity and junior varsity teams won their league matches against Canoga Park at El Camino.

The Conquistadores’ varsity team defeated Taft, 9-15, 15-8, 15-9, 15-13. The junior varsity won, 15-2, 15-10.

Senior hitter-blockers Tom Figueroa and Don Fraser led the varsity offensively and defensively, with 80% spiking and almost 90% blocking.

GIRLS TRACK

Thousand Oaks 73, Simi Valley 44

The Thousand Oaks track team posted 9 of 10 top marks to beat Simi Valley 73-44 and claim the Marmonte League championship.

Sophomore Sharon Manship led the win for Thousand Oaks, posting victories in the long jump, 440, 220 and 440-relay. Stacy Leach won the 330-hurdles, 110-hurdles and was also part of the 440-relay team.

Thousand Oaks’ record lept to 6-0, while Simi Valley dropped to 5-1.
