Point Loma Scores in Eighth to Triumph
Point Loma Nazarene College scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie to beat UC San Diego, 4-2, in a nonconference baseball game at Olsen Field on Thursday afternoon.
Richard Topping started the Crusader rally with a leadoff double. Following a walk, an error by UCSD shortstop David Stanovich allowed Point Loma to take a 3-2 lead. A single drove in the Crusaders’ final run.
Topping had three hits. Stanovich led UCSD’s attack by going 4 for 5 and driving in a run.
Randy Boswell (5-4) pitched three shutout innings in relief and was the winner. Dan Healy (2-6) was the loser. Triton starter David de Cordova held Point Loma scoreless through three innings, but had to leave the game in the fourth when he hurt his back.
Point Loma is 23-23, UCSD fell to 22-20-1.
