NBC’s Enberg Is Honorary Chairman for Scripps Hospital Tennis Tournament

NBC sportscaster Dick Enberg will serve as the honorary chairman of a sixth annual tennis tournament sponsored by Scripps Memorial Hospital’s Cancer Center on Saturday and Sunday at the San Diego Tennis and Racquet Club.

Proceeds will go to the Scripps Cancer Home Care Program, a free service to cancer patients and their families. A “pro-am” segment featuring professionals from local clubs has been added this year.

Three area drivers are entered in the California Sports Car Club “free-for-all” races, part of Saturday and Sunday’s Times/Nissan Grand Prix of Endurance at the Riverside International Raceway.

Forrest Wicks of Escondido and Michael Denny of San Diego will compete in the Formula Ford/Club event at 3:45 p.m. Saturday. Linda Haneline of San Diego will be one of two women driving in the second Cal Club race.

The El Cajon Stock Car Racing Assn. action will return Saturday to Cajon Speedway after last week’s rainout, only the eighth rainout at the track in the last 14 seasons.

The super and pro stocks will be featured on the three-eighth-mile paved oval next to Gillespie Field. The first destruction derby of the season will cap the action. Race time is 7:30 p.m. with qualifying runs set for 6:15 p.m.

Super stock driver Mark Norris of Lakeside and pro stock veteran Mike Carver, also from Lakeside, will lead the talented field.

The destruction derby will be the first of seven such events this season. Twenty dilapidated vehicles are expected to bash their way deeper into oblivion in the infield following the main events.

The American Cancer Society is still accepting entries for its sixth annual Times Advocate ACE Cancer Tennis Tournament on April 27 and 28 and May 4 and 5 at Tennis Escondido.

The event is sanctioned by the United States Tennis Assn. and it includes singles, doubles, open-seniors and ABC competition. Entry fees are $15 per singles event and $25 per doubles team.

Star drivers and their hot rod trucks will compete in a three-night Championship Series Point Meet at the San Diego Sports Arena May 2 through May 4.

The U.S. Hot Rod Truck Pull and Mud Bog Racing action will attract drivers from all over the country. Ken Guen of Oklahoma City is currently No. 1 in the Ford/Budweiser Championship Series, which offers a $10,000 prize at completion.
