Charles, Burns Advance to Second Round at Ojai

The Cal State Northridge men’s doubles tennis team of Ed Charles and Robert Burns--and women’s singles player Marla Reid-- advanced to the second round of the Ojai Invitational Tournament Thursday.

Charles and Burns, two of eight Matador tennis team members at the tournament, won their first match by default when the Pomona-Pitzer men’s doubles team they were supposed to play did not show up. Reid advanced after a bye in the first round.

The Ojai tournament, which is the oldest and largest amateur tennis tournament in the country, has more than 900 participants during the four-day event.

Men’s singles player Pierre Mareschal won his first match, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 but lost to Chapman College’s Troy Turnbull in the second round, 6-4, 7-6. CSUN’s other men’s singles player, Bill Johnson, lost in the first round to Chip Cullison of Westmont College, 6-2, 6-2.

Matador Missy Conn, playing in the women’s singles division, double defaulted when her USC opponent also did not show up for the match. She will not advance.

Dobbins Wins Shotput at Mt. SAC

Antonio Dobbins was the only winner for Glendale College at the Mt. SAC Relays on Thursday, capturing the shotput event with a distance of 52 feet, 8 inches.

The 6-2, 245-pound sophomore placed second in the discus with a toss of 160-11.

In other events at Mt. San Antonio College, Pete Magill, a graduate of La Canada High, finished second in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:53, and sophomore Brian Patchett finished second in the high jump with a 6-10. Magill’s time was the third best community college mark in the 1,500 this season.

Amos Stevenson, substituting for Joe Richardson, was second in the triple jump with a wind-aided 48-1. Richardson, who has jumped 54-1, will try for the state community college record of 54-3 Sunday in the Invitational division at Mt. SAC.

Revving Up for Riverside

Nine drivers from the Valley area are entered in the California Sports Car Club Free-For-All races, part of the two-day Times/Nissan Grand Prix of Endurance at Riverside International Raceway.

Seven will compete in the Formula Ford-Club Ford race Sunday. They are Carlos Bobeda (Northridge), Bob Montgomery (Agoura Hills), Jeff Nadler (Sylmar), Tom Abbott (North Hollywood), Jon Rodgers (Simi Valley), Gene Wood (Canoga Park) and Richard Krueger (Sepulveda).

The two others, Peter Zimmerman (Agoura Hills) and Tim Boot (Chatsworth), will compete in a race on Sunday that consists of eight different Cal Club classes.

Amateur Track Meet at Reseda

The Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor an amateur track meet for youths aged 9 to 13 on May 4 at Reseda High.

The free meet, which begins at 3 p.m., will feature events such as the 50 meters, 100 meters, running long jump, softball throw, high jump, 400 meters and 1,500 meters.
