Brigham Young Wins WAC Tennis Championship

Brigham Young University, which has dominated the Western Athletic Conference in football in recent seasons, won its first WAC men’s tennis championship since 1979 on Wednesday, defeating New Mexico, 5-1, on the San Diego State campus.

No. 1 singles player Rob Fought, the top-seeded player in the WAC individual championships, defeated Steve Otero, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, to lead the Cougars, who won three of their five matches in three sets. New Mexico, which eliminated six-time defending champion Utah, 5-4, in the semifinals on Tuesday, got its only win at No. 5 singles where Galen Garcia defeated Andy Noorda, 2-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5).

Utah won the third-place match, defeating San Diego State, 6-3.

In the individual championships, SDSU’s Julio Noriega advanced to the second round with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 win over Mike Gunther of New Mexico. Aztec Ian McGlaughlin also advanced, beating Colorado State’s Mark Hoesel, 6-2, 6-4.
