Sheriff’s Department detectives are investigating a Monday morning fire that left five families homeless in Ramona, a department spokesman said Wednesday. No one was hurt in the two-alarm fire, which razed a multi-unit residential building in the 1500 block of Wilson Street.

The fire caused an estimated $300,000 worth of damage to the structure and about $100,000 damage to its contents and six cars parked in the garage.

Sheriff’s investigators were called in by the Ramona fire chief, who suspected arson. “The fire was originally found to be incendiary in nature and looked suspicious,” the spokesman said.
