A moderate earthquake rolled through Coalinga; no damage was reported. The quake, which measured 4.4 on the Richter scale, occurred about five miles southeast of Coalinga and about 200 miles north of Los Angeles, the state Department of Water Resources reported. The Police Department received only one call from someone curious about the quake’s magnitude. “People are so used to it, they just sleep right through it,” said police dispatcher Freda Barnhart. On May 2, 1983, Coalinga was hit by a violent quake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale that caused $31 million in damage and 47 injuries.
