A BIG DAY : 28 Hollypark Bettors Hit Pick Six, Share in a Record Pool

Early-bird attendance, estimated at 7,800, and an afternoon crowd of 34,587 Wednesday produced an all-time national wagering record in the Perfect Six of $2,388,186 at Hollywood Park.

Including a two-day carryover pool of $477,790.15, the total pool available to be won Wednesday was $2,865,976.15, also a national record for the pick six form of betting.

There were 28 winners, with each ticket returning $51,146.60. There were 1,255 consolation tickets paying $760.40 apiece.

Hollywood Park patrons also wa gered a track record $423,089 during early-bird betting, of which $261,288 was in the Perfect Six.

The total handle for the day was $8,737,622, the highest in U.S. racing history for a non-weekend or holiday date and the third-highest in track history. The figure was bettered only on Breeder’s Cup day last Nov. 10 and on Kentucky Derby day May 4.

In Wednesday’s $48,000 feature race for older fillies and mares, Laffit Pincay rode Envie De Rire to the lead in the final furlong and came away with the victory.

Envie De Rire finished two lengths in front of Sales Bulletin, ridden by Gary Stevens. Dontstop Themusic, the even-money favorite ridden by Eddie Delahoussaye, tired in the stretch and ended up third.

Envie De Rire was clocked in 1:35 3/5 for the mile over a firm turf course.

Sent off the second choice, Envie De Rire paid $7.80, $4.60 and $3. Sales Bulletin, a 35-1 longshot, returned $20.20 and $4.60. Dontstop Themusic paid $2.40 to show.

Other winners in the pick six races were Nat’s Time (second race, $6.40 to win), Mombo’s Pet (third, $17.60), Accu Back (fourth, $19.40), Prospective Star (fifth, $6.80), Sharp Control (sixth, $22.20) and Awesome River (seventh, $2.60). The pick six numbers were 8-2-3-2-3-8).
