Local News in Brief : Driver Killed as Car Plunges Over Cliff

A23-year-old Hollywood man was killed Sunday when his car plunged more than 200 feet down a Topanga Canyon cliff, Los Angeles police said.

The victim's name was withheld pending notification of relatives. Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses to the 11 a.m. accident said they saw the car go over the cliff at a Topanga Canyon Boulevard curve about three miles north of Pacific Coast Highway, Officer Gene Nabonne said.

He said the witnesses reported that the car was traveling slightly faster than the area's 30-m.p.h. speed limit.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department mountain rescue team assisted in recovering the body, Nabonne said.
