Energy Secretary John S. Herrington approved a new transmission line and improvements in existing lines to bring up to 1.6 million kilowatts of surplus Pacific Northwest hydroelectric power to California. The project, estimated to cost $400 million, will expand the Pacific Northwest-Pacific Southwest Intertie, which was completed in 1970. Pacific Northwest utilities have had surplus low-cost generating capacity in recent years, and demand for power in California continues to grow.
