Toro Listed in Stable Condition With Broken Ribs, Bruises After Falling From Mount

Jockey Fernando Toro was dumped by his mount, Chelkov, in the seventh race at Hollywood Park and kicked by at least one trailing horse.

Toro, 44, was listed in stable but guarded condition at Centinela Hospital Medical Center. Dr. Robert Kerlan said Toro suffered two broken ribs in addition to bruises to the liver and right kidney, but both organs are functioning. Toro will remain in the hospital’s intensive care unit for a few days. Chelkov suffered a broken leg and was destroyed.

In the feature race, Fifty Six Ina Row forced the early pace set by Premiership and then gunned to a neck victory in the $65,500 Triple Bend Handicap.

With Laffit Pincay aboard for his second stakes victory of the day, Fifty Six Ina Row raced the seven furlongs in 1:20 4-5 to notch his second stakes win of the year and stamp himself a top contender for sprint honors in the West.

Fifty Six Ina Row paid $5, $2.80 and $2.20. Premiership, ridden by Rafael Meza, returned $3.20 and $2.40 to place. French Legionaire returned $2.40 for third.
