USFL Roundup : Stars Reach Playoffs by Stopping Bulls’ Rozier

The Baltimore Stars held Jacksonville’s Mike Rozier to 60 yards rushing Sunday to win the United States Football League’s eighth playoff spot by defeating the Bulls, 17-12.

The Stars (8-6-1) were led by running back Kelvin Bryant’s 104 yards on 18 carries and by quarterback Chuck Fusina’s 166 yards on 19 of 30 passing.

The victory, before 9,663 at College Park, Md., avenged a season-opening 22-14 loss to the Bulls.

Rozier, the Heisman Trophy-winning fullback, is second in the USFL in rushing, behind the New Jersey Generals’ Herschel Walker. His 60 yards came on 16 carries.

Jacksonville quarterback Brian Sipe threw for 198 yards, completing 15 of 26 attempts, but suffered a separated shoulder when sacked by Mike Walker. He sustained a similar injury in the season-opener.

Bryant’s second touchdown of the day, a two-yard run with 10:51 left, put Baltimore in a commanding position with a 17-6 lead. It came on the first play after a 60-yard interception return of an Ed Luther pass by Jonathon Sutton.

Bryant also scored on a six-yard run in the second period to give Baltimore a 10-3 lead.

Jacksonville (8-7) scored first on a 30-yard first-quarter field goal by Brian Franco. The Stars tied it soon after on a 41-yard field goal by David Trout.

After Bryant’s second-quarter touchdown, Jacksonville cut the deficit to 10-6 on a 28-yard third-quarter field goal by Franco.

Jacksonville scored the last touchdown with 1:53 remaining on a 10-yard pass from Luther to Donald Dykes.

Oakland 38, Portland 20--Quarterback Bobby Hebert and wide receiver Anthony Carter hooked up on a pair of touchdown passes at Oakland to lead the Invaders to their seventh straight victory, before 12,740.

Hebert, who completed 20 of 31 attempts for 328 yards, found Carter with an 18-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter, then came back with a 19-yard toss in the third period.

Invader fullback Albert Bentley scored on a one-yard run to break a 14-14 tie late in the first half, and Oakland scored two more touchdowns in the third quarter to take the lead.

Portland quarterback Matt Robinson threw two touchdown passes: one for 17 yards to wide receiver Louis Jackson and the other an eight-yard toss to tight end Dan Ross.

Oakland improved its record to 11-3-1. Portland dropped to 4-11.
