The Pepperdine basketball team, which finished last season in the opening round of the NCAA Midwest Regional tournament, will open next season in a new version of the NIT--the first preseason Big Apple National Invitation Tournament. The names of the invited teams and the pairings were announced Thursday.

Pepperdine, defending West Coast Athletic Conference champion, will be one of 16 teams in the field and the only one from Southern California.

The tournament will start at four regional sites Nov. 22 and 24. The regional winners will advance to New York’s Madison Square Garden for the semifinals Nov. 29. The championship game will be played Dec. 1.
