Private Pilot Facing Inquiry in Near-Miss With Passenger Jet
The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the pilot of a private airplane blamed for a reported near collision with a jetliner south of National Airport, the agency said Wednesday.
The single-engine craft flew into restricted air space around the airport on June 9 without authorization from the control tower and passed beneath Eastern Airlines Flight 661 bound for Atlanta, the FAA said.
The agency has notified the pilot, who was not identified, that he is under investigation and he has 10 days to explain any mitigating circumstances, the agency said. The pilot faces penalties ranging from a reprimand to revocation of his license and a fine up to $1,000.
