A burglar terrorized a Sun Valley family in their home Saturday morning, fatally shooting the father before fleeing, Los Angeles police said.

The father was identified as Chainarong Khouananth, 32. Police said he was killed by a gunshot wound to his upper body and died at the scene.

The burglar entered the house on the 13000 block of Schoenborn Street shortly before 6:50 a.m. and assaulted and threatened the family verbally in an attempt to locate valuables, said Lt. Bernard Conine.

Khouananth, who came to the United States from Thailand 10 years ago and had lived on Schoenborn Street for 2 1/2 years, apparently was not resisting the attackers when he was shot, Conine said.

“We don’t know why he was shot,” he said.

The victim’s wife, Somkid, and an 8-year-old son were beaten and then tied up, Conine said. The woman was able to quickly free herself and alert neighbors, who then called police. The wife and son reportedly suffered only minor bruises.

A 2 1/2-year-old daughter slept through the 30-minute incident in another room, police said.

Police would not say what was stolen.
