Few Prospects Seen to Fight Unbeaten Nunn

“Wanted: A talented boxer to fight undefeated middleweight Michael Nunn.

“Requirements: Boxer must be able to defend himself and throw a punch once in a while.

“Interested applicants should get in touch with Dan Goossen, Nunn’s manager, at the Ten Goose Gym in North Hollywood.”

Dan Goossen hasn’t put the above advertisement into the classified section, but if another week or two passes without finding a good opponent for Nunn, his top prospect, he might strongly consider it.

Nunn is 7-0, having knocked out each of his opponents in the first four rounds. For that reason, Goossen is having difficulty lining up new opponents.

Goossen had four more prospective opponents back out the day after Nunn’s latest conquest--a third-round knockout Monday night over James Waire at the Country Club in Reseda.

“He’s destroying people and no one wants any part of him,” Goossen said.

Goossen had planned to next fight Nunn on an ESPN card in Las Vegas on Aug. 22. Since then, he decided to keep Nunn home for an Aug. 26 main event at the Country Club. Opponent: to be announced.

“The television exposure is great, and it’s helping us, but we need to build a local following,” Goossen said. “We’ve been selling out every fight night, but the people haven’t seen the real Michael Nunn, yet.

“We want to get a guy in there who will put up some resistance--someone who wants to win . . . or at least throw some punches.”

Goossen said he was disappointed in the performance of Waire, a veteran of more than 40 professional fights.

Nunn knocked down a listless Waire three times in the first two rounds, before referee Lou Filippo stopped the fight 2:31 into the third round.

“I was wondering when (Waire) was going to start fighting back,” Goossen said. “He never did.”

Goossen said he is negotiating with promoter Bob Arum and Top Rank Inc. to bring ESPN-televised fights to the Country Club.
