AirCal, the Newport Beach-based regional airline, said it flew its passengers 161 million miles in July, which was an increase of 17.7% over July of 1984 and the best July traffic in the airline’s history.

The airline had 12.6% more potential passenger-carrying miles--created by additional planes and routes--this July, compared to last, and its passenger boardings increased by 9.5% to 378,794. Its planes flew at 55.5% capacity, up from 53.1% in 1984.

The July figures reflect an upward trend in passenger traffic that AirCal has enjoyed for the first seven months of 1985. For the seven months, the airline flew its passengers 1.1 billion miles, an increase of 22.7% over the same period of 1984, and the airline’s passenger-carrying miles increased by 17.6%.

AirCal said its traffic was boosted by the 45-day pilot strike against United Airlines in May and June because AirCal competes with United on its Los Angeles-San Francisco and San Francisco-Pacific Northwest routes.
