Roundup in South-Central L.A.
Startled residents in South-Central Los Angeles awoke early today to the sound of hoofs striking pavement when a small herd of ponies, in the area for a fund-raising carnival, broke out of a nearby backyard.
The five galloping ponies, spotted at about 1 a.m. near the intersection of 81st Street and Avalon Boulevard, were rounded up and returned to their quarters at 8119 S. Main St., headquarters of the Southern California Prison Coalition. A spokesman for the nonprofit community service group said the ponies broke free while being unloaded from a van.
