An electrical short sparked a fire in one of two Amtrak engines early today, forcing the evacuation of up to 400 passengers en route from Los Angeles to New Orleans.

No injuries were reported in the fire, which stopped the eastbound train at about 1 a.m. in a desert area about 80 miles east of Los Angeles, and was brought under control in about 45 minutes, Amtrak and Riverside County Fire Department officials said. Amtrak spokesman Clifford Black said the train resumed travel at 5:50 a.m. after a five-hour delay.
