Responding to a court order to protect bald eagles from lead poisoning, the state Fish and Game Commission ordered hunters to use only steel shotgun pellets in the Klamath Basin and Grizzly Island Wildlife Area. U.S. District Court Judge Edward Garcia, ruling in a suit filed by the National Wildlife Federation, had banned waterfowl hunting unless hunters are required to use steel pellets rather than lead shot. The federation argued that a number of eagles--a federally protected species--have been killed by lead poisoning after feeding upon dead or wounded waterfowl.
