Nitz of Sacramento Wins Senior Men’s Event of Mayor’s Cup Bicycle Races

Leonard Nitz of Sacramento won the 35-mile senior men’s race Sunday to highlight the Wheat Thins Mayor’s Cup Bicycle Races at Ocean Beach.

Nitz was timed in 56 minutes, 25 seconds in nosing out Bruce Donaghy of Allentown, Pa.

Danny Franger of San Diego finished third, followed by Kurt Stockton of Pacific Beach, Paul Curley of North Dighton, Mass., Joel Stetina of Indianapolis, Paul Biskup of San Diego, David Ware of Charlotte, N.C., Jeff Kress of Chicago and David Lettieri of Boulder, Colo.

Betsy Davis of Lavalette, N.J., won the 15-mile women’s race in 27 minutes, 22 seconds.

Judith Caunter of Hanover, N.H., finished second, followed by Sophie Eaton of Torrance, Leslie Schenk of San Francisco, Rebecca Evans of Kansas City, Mo., Susan Ehlers of Tenafly, N.J., Madonna Harris of Miami, Katherine Riggert of Tucson; Nancy Sheldon of Lubbock, Tex. and Janelle Parks of Orange.

John McMillin of Hollywood, won the 20-mile men’s regional amateur race in 33 minutes, 40 seconds. Chris Kuzma of Virginia Beach, Va., finished second and Robert Siligy of Carpinteria, was third.

The series of races was the 14th stop on the 19-race series culminating at Boston next month. The 15th stop is Monday at Beverly Hills.
