Andre Guardi booted a 25-yard field goal with three seconds left to lift Utah to a 20-17 victory over Boise State in the college football opener for both teams Saturday night.

Guardi’s second field goal of the game, which made a winner of new Coach Jim Fassel, was set up when Utah freshman Carl Harry blocked a Boise State punt by Tom Schimmer with 46 seconds left.

Rikki Wilson returned the ball 14 yards to the Bronco nine-yard line.

Utah ran two plays before Guardi attempted his game-winner.

Boise State had tied the score, 17-17, with 3:41 left when quarterback Hazen Choates teamed with Tony Hunter on an 18-yard touchdown pass play. The score was set up when Andy Regimbal took the snap from center on a fake punt and ran 38 yards for a first down.

The Utah win avenged a 28-6 loss to the Broncos in 1980, the only other time the teams had met.
