The West : High-Scoring Air Force Soars Over Wyoming

Quarterback Bart Weiss ran for three touchdowns and threw a six-yard touchdown pass to lead Air Force to a 49-7 victory over Wyoming Saturday in a Western Athletic Conference game at Laramie, Wyo.

Air Force (2-0) has scored 97 points in two games. Wyoming, ranked as the third-worst defensive team in the nation last year, has allowed 88 points in two losses.

Air Force lost three first-quarter fumbles as Wyoming took a 7-0 lead on a 38-yard touchdown pass from Scott Runyan to Allyn Griffin.

But it was all Air Force after that. The Falcons’ first score came on their first possession of the second quarter as Weiss capped a 56-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run. Weiss added another one-yard touchdown later in the quarter, and the Falcons led, 14-7, at the half.

Colorado State 41, Texas El Paso 24--Steve Bartelo rushed for 174 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Colorado State at Fort Collins, Colo.

John Harvey scored three touchdowns, and Hugo Castellanos kicked a 35-yard field goal for Texas El Paso.

New Mexico 34, New Mexico State 27--Quarterback Billy Rucker victimized New Mexico State’s secondary with three long touchdown passes at Las Cruces.

The victory snapped New Mexico’s nine-game losing streak dating back to 1984 and gave the Lobos (1-1) their ninth straight win over New Mexico State.

Rucker hit freshman Terance Mathis with touchdown passes of 74 and 58 yards and threw an 84-yard bomb to wide receiver Tori Brown.

New Mexico State is 0-2.
