Rich Gedman hit for the cycle, and drove in seven runs, and Wade Boggs had four hits in five at-bats as the Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 13-1, Wednesday at Fenway Park.

Despite the loss, the Blue Jays remained five games ahead in the East as the second-place New York Yankeeslost at Detroit, 5-2.

“If we had a 16-game lead and 17 to play I wouldn’t feel comfortable,” Toronto Manager Bobby Cox said.

Gedman hit a solo homer, his 18th of the year, in the third inning, a three-run triple in the fourth, a run-scoring infield single in the fifth that made it 10-0 and a two-run double in the seventh.

“I wish I could explain it,” Gedman said. “I try to keep my head down and get good wood on the ball. You don’t know where it’s going after you hit it.”

Boggs’ four hits, all singles, raised his major league-leading average to .372 and his leading hit total to 219--the most in the majors since Willie Wilson’s 230 for Kansas City in 1980.

Jim Rice and Bill Buckner each added three hits for Boston, which shelled six Blue Jay pitchers in an 18-hit attack.

The Red Sox swept the two-game series and won all six games against the Blue Jays played at Boston this season.

Al Nipper (9-11) retired Toronto’s first 11 batters and faced just 19 through the first six innings. He scattered six hits, struck out five and walked none in his fifth complete game of the season.

Seattle 6, Kansas City 0--Bill Swift, Roy Thomas and Ed Nunez combined on a three-hitter, and the Mariners continued their mastery over the Royals with the victory at Kansas City.

The Mariners, who beat Kansas City, 7-0, Tuesday night, extended the Royals’ scoreless-inning string to 26. Seattle has beaten Kansas City in eight of nine games this season, including the first three in this four-game series.

Swift gave up one hit and struck out three before being replaced by Thomas at the start of the fourth. The Mariners said Swift left because of a groin strain suffered in the third.

Thomas (7-0) gave up one hit in 4 innings, and Nunez allowed one hit the rest of the way.

Mark Gubicza (13-8) got the loss.

Oakland 1, Cleveland 0--Pinch-hitter Dave Collins singled home the game’s only run in the eighth inning, and Jose Rijo and Jay Howell combined on a seven-hitter at Cleveland.

With one out in the eighth, rookie Jose Canseco singled off Indian starter Don Schulze (3-9). Canseco took second on a groundout, and then Collins, batting for Mike Gallego, lined a 3-and-0 pitch to right for his RBI single.

Baltimore 4, Milwaukee 2--Fred Lynn hit his 21st home run of the season, and Scott McGregor pitched a six-hitter as the Orioles beat the Brewers at Baltimore.
