David Gutierrez, the former student body president at Montgomery High School, will have the hometown crowd in his corner tonight when he tries for his 11th straight professional victory. Gutierrez will fight Tommy Richardson (10-10) in an eight-round welterweight match at the El Cortez Hotel Convention Center.

Gutierrez, a student at UC San Diego, was one win short of qualifying for the 1984 U.S. Olympic team. His final Olympic Trials’ opponent, Mark Breland, who ended Gutierrez’s Olympic dreams, called the San Diegan “one of the toughest fighters I have ever fought in the amateurs or the pros.”

The Gutierrez-Richardson bout is the main event of a three-bout card. Rigo Lopez (7-0) of San Diego will fight Mike Mayon (39-33) for the Stroh’s welterweight Southern Regional title. Ruben Proa (5-1) of San Diego will fight Javier Tamayo (6-0) in a light-heavyweight bout.
