Friday’s Highlights : Campbell Leads Riverside Poly to 35-0 Victory

Defending Big Five Conference champion Riverside Poly defeated Riverside North, 35-0, Friday night in a nonleague game at UC Riverside to increase its winning streak to 15.

The Bears (2-0) got an outstanding game from senior quarterback Bruce Campbell who scored on runs of 56 and 7 yards, and threw touchdown passes of 29 and 47 yards to wide receiver Todd Burden.

Riverside Poly’s defense limited North (0-2) to 118 yards in total offense.

City Banning 13, Santa Maria 9--Trailing 9-6 with nine minutes remaining in the game at Santa Maria, Pilot running back Todd Coefield scored on an 8-yard run to insure the win. Santa Maria scored first in the second quarter on a 30-yard field goal by Jesus Sanchez. In the third quarter, Banning (1-0) took the lead on a 2-yard run by running back Eric Sharp. Later in the quarter, Santa Maria regained the lead on Wayne Dudley’s 8-yard TD scamper. Damon Culver was the leading rusher for Banning with 87 yards in 22 carries. Dudley led Santa Maria (0-2) with 107 yards in 27 carries.

Washington 23, Los Angeles 6--Tailback Shelton Troisclair scored on a 60-yard return of a free kick and on a 3-yard plunge at Los Angeles in the season opener for both teams. Los Angeles was led by Jason Avent who scored on a 42-yard run and had 55 yards in six carries.

Southern Section Schurr 62, Keppel 0--After a mediocre 4-6 season in 1984 when then missed the playoffs, the Spartans appear to have regained the form that made them a consistant conference title contender. Fred Hoyle and Gerald Leal led the Spartans (2-0). Hoyle gained 138 yards in 9 carries and scored one touchdown. Leal gained 87 yards in 11 attempts and scored three touchdowns. Quarterback Eric Rubalcava had TD passes of 4 and 62 yards. Schurr’s defense caused five Keppel fumbles and limited the Aztecs (0-1) to 43 yards in total offense.

Bishop Amat 33, Los Altos 6--Junior running back Eric Bieniemy continues on course for a 2,000-yard season, gaining 305 yards in 36 carries in the nonleague game at Bishop Amat. In two games Bishop Amat’s Bieniemy has gained 502 yards in 61 carries. The Lancers are 2-0 and Los Altos 1-1.

Northview 21, Baldwin Park 19--Quarterback Billy Gallis flipped a 14-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Frausto with two minutes remaining to give the visiting Vikings a come-from-behind win after Baldwin Park led 19-7 in the fourth quarter. The Braves (0-1), which reached the Southeastern Conference final last season, had a chance to win the game but Chris Torres missed a 35-yard field goal attempt with 35 seconds remaining. Northview is now 1-1.
