Kennedy High broke open a tight game with four second-half touchdowns Friday night to defeat Crenshaw, 35-6, in the season-opener for both football teams at Kennedy.

John Thomas, a senior fullback, scored twice in the third quarter on runs of 46 and 2 yards.

Those scores expanded the Golden Cougars’ lead over Crenshaw’s Cougars to 20-6 after three quarters.

Kennedy quarterback Eric Evans went in from one yard out, while Patrick Hardy scored from four yards out to conclude the scoring.

The first half was a study of frustration for Kennedy, despite the Golden Cougars holding a 7-6 lead.

The Golden Cougars forced numerous fumbles by Crenshaw but could not recover a majority of them. As a result, Crenshaw had the ball for most of the half. Crenshaw ran 35 plays in the first two quarters, Kennedy 18.

Kennedy’s only touchdown in the first half came after Crenshaw punter Rashone Weatherspoon fumbled the ball at the Cougar 12-yard line.

On the very next play, split back Marcus Jones ran around left end for nine yards before fumbling. Kennedy’s Brett Logan recovered in the end zone with 2:28 remaining in the first quarter.

Greg Friedman’s kick made it 7-0.

Crenshaw came back with an 80-yard, 13-play drive to score. Quarterback Steven Stepter connected with Jaque Bowyer from 23 yards out to make it 7-6.
