Beverly Hills 19, Harvard 17--Gary Melnik kicked a 42-yard field goal with one second remaining to give host Beverly Hills High a 19-17 come-from-behind victory over Harvard High.
The field goal was set up by a 19-yard pass from Eric Mueller to Willie Crawford Jr.
The Normans (2-0) trailed 17-7 at halftime before narrowing the deficit to seven on Melnik’s 33-yard field goal with 8:12 left in the third quarter.
One play after David Buchbinder recovered a Harvard fumble on the Saracens’ 20 with 9:51 left in the game, Mueller hit David Barad in the end zone to slice Harvard’s lead to one point. But the two-point conversion attempt failed, necessitating Melnik’s last-second kick.
Mueller also teamed with Barad on a 36-yard touchdown pass with 9:37 remaining in the first half to tie the game, 7-7, before the Saracens kicked a field goal and quarterback Cory Thabit hooked up with Merritt Robinson on 66-yard pass play with with 55 seconds left to give Harvard (0-2) its 10-point halftime advantage.
