Hurricane Causes Havoc With Sports in East
Hurricane Gloria caused the cancellation of horse racing at nine Eastern tracks and the postponement of Friday night’s Baltimore Orioles-New York Yankees game at Yankee Stadium. The baseball game was rescheduled for Sunday as part of a doubleheader.
Two NHL exhibition games--Pittsburgh at New Jersey and Philadelphia vs. Boston at Hershey, Pa.--also were canceled. At at least two college football games scheduled for today--Iona vs. Randolph-Macon at Ashland, Va., and Springfield (Mass.) at Towson State (Md.)--were rescheduled for Sunday as the storm knocked out power lines, flooded highways and disrupted travel from North Carolina to New England.
Thoroughbred race tracks canceling their programs were Belmont and the Meadowlands in the New York City area, Rockingham in New Hampshire, Suffolk Downs near Boston, Philadelphia Park and Garden State near Philadelphia, Laurel in Maryland and Delaware in Stanton, Del. The Yonkers Raceway in New York also called off its harness program.
