The pilot of a Delta Airlines 727 jetliner reported that his plane came within 50 yards of colliding with a private plane, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said.

The Delta pilot veered sharply to the left to avoid the small plane as he descended to land at O’Hare International Airport on Sept. 20, FAA spokesman Mort Edelstein said Friday. The number of passengers aboard the planes was not disclosed.

“The small plane was where it shouldn’t have been,” Edelstein said.
