Big Games : Fairfax (2-0) at Wilson (0-2)

Fairfax Coach Dennis Furlong hopes his defensive backs know where they’re supposed to be on pass defense when the Lions travel to Wilson at 8 p.m. Friday.

Although Furlong’s team routed University last week, 57-12, and Lion tailback Michael Hale ran wild, the Warriors drew first blood on the second play from scrimmage after receiving the opening kickoff. University quarterback Jonn Moomaw tossed a 54-yard scoring pass to wide-open wide receiver Paul Richardson.

“We were supposed to be in a three-deep zone, and we only had two guys back there,” said Furlong. He said that three defensive backs who alternate at one spot were on the sidelines when the Warriors struck through the air, and each of them thought one of the others was playing defense at the time.

“Our 10-man defense definitely doesn’t work, and this week we’ve put one person in charge of counting the men on the field,” he said. Furlong will need all his pass defenders against Wilson, which, despite losses to South Gate and Lincoln, is supposed to have a strong air attack.

After University scored first, Hale decided to return the favor, returning the next kickoff 76 yards for a touchdown. Hale went on to carry 11 times for 235 yards and four more touchdowns. In two games, he has 30 carries for 321 yards and six touchdowns by rushing as well as the kick-return score against University.

Linebackers Derek Mallard and La’Trelle Barnes continue to excel for Fairfax. Against University, Mallard had 11 tackles to raise his team-leading total to 25, and Barnes had 10 tackles. Mallard, a tight end on offense, also caught a 54-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Rodney Dorsett, who completed 5 of 8 passes for 161 yards.

Culver City (2-0-1) at Leuzinger (3-0)

Last week Leuzinger exploded for a 33-0 win over Inglewood, but Culver, despite a strong passing attack, couldn’t score a touchdown in a 3-3 tie with Mira Costa. Friday’s 7:30 p.m. match-up at Leuzinger is a non-league game for both.

Against Mira Costa, Culver quarterback Frank Dolce came back from an ankle injury the week before to complete 15 of 34 passes for 202 yards. But the Centaurs’ only score came on a 36-yard field goal by Hoon Hahn.

Culver Coach Fred Fuller said his team’s offense last week was hamstrung by penalties, including nine major infractions.

The Centaurs can’t afford mistakes against Leuzinger, particularly on pass defense. The Olympians are led by 6-2 quarterback Michael Reddington, who also likes to run on the rollout. Fuller said that Reddington “is an excellent runner and a tough kid.”
