Walter Sims of North Hollywood won an unanimous decision over Bret Summers of Marysville, Wash., in a 10-round lightweight bout held Tuesday in nearby Everett.

Sims, a product of the Ten Goose Boxing organization of North Hollywood, dominated the fight, knocking down his opponent four times, including twice in the final round.

Sims is 15-2-2 with 10 knockouts.

Defenseman Thor Lee of the soccer team and cross-country runner Alex Aguirre have been named athletes of the month for September at Cal State Northridge.

Lee is an integral part of the Matador defense that has recorded six shutouts in its first nine games. Aguirre ran the second-fastest time in CSUN history last Saturday at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego.

The Cal State Northridge women’s volleyball team is rated 13th in the nation in this week’s NCAA Division II poll of coaches.

The Lady Matadors (1-0 in the CCAA, 3-5 overall) continue to defend their California Collegiate Athletic Assn. championship tonight at home against Cal Poly Pomona, ranked second in the nation.

The team of Larry Morfield and Doug Glatt from Encino defeated Dave Morones and Richard Lopez of Hacienda Heights for the open men’s doubles title at the California State Handball Championships in Fresno on Sunday.
